Residual Chlorine in Tap Water:
Most of sterilize in the tap water treatment process is chlorinate(sometimes use UV or ozone). In order to make sure that water will not be contaminated by bacteria and germs when distributing to the end user, post chlorinate is necessary. In California, the residual chlorine of tap water is about 0.8~4ppm (mg/L).
Residual Chlorine in Tap Water is Harmful to One's Health:
It is clear to everyone that residual chlorine is harmful to one's health. Residual chlorine in drinking water is recommended to be less than 0.2 ppm (the lesser the better). For wash or bath, it is recommended to be less then 0.6 ppm (the lesser the better) of residual chlorine.
Drinking high residual chlorine tap water is harmful. The high residual chlorine of tap water may transition to a carcinogenic substance, Trihalomethanes (THMs), when boiling. Drinking water that contains a small amount of THMs may increase the percentage to cause cancer.
Long term contact with residual chlorine will cause dry hair, dry skin, allergy, scales, and itch when wash or bath.
When showering, residual chlorine gets into blood vessels through open pores and stays in the body. Residual chlorine in steam is 20 times more concentrated than in water. Over a long period of time, accumulated residual chlorine in human body becomes a burden. It might cause cancer, or irritates lungs and respiratory tract and cause allergy and asthma.
